i went to rome this weekend. roma, roma, roma*. i really love that city and still harbor hope that i will someday live there. as the other two interns and i had already been there enough times to have covered most of the big tourist sites, we just had a random relaxed day. we kicked it off at the hard rock (one of my favorite things to do in italy, i kid you not), went to the BONE CHURCH, visited the bocca della verita’ (mostly so i could pretend i was audrey hepburn), stopped by the vatican (mass was going on, but in german, and then my mother called while i was there – it was strange all around) and after that just wandered across the trastevere and into piazza navona, before finishing up with mcdonald’s (YES) at the stazione. yeah, i love rome.
today was back to work as usual, where i serve my government and change american citizens’ lives on a daily basis, doing everything from officially bestowing nationality on babies’ born abroad to shopping for underwear for destitute expatriates (oh, but that’s a story for another day.)
after work today has been pretty great as well, though there is still no sign of nico, italian man of my dreams. granted we only shared a couple of sentences in the hallway – in a group setting, no less – and in that 30-second exchange he had to finish my sentence as all italian had left my head at the sight of him. still, i love him. today travis, the male intern at the consulate, was playing basketball with three italian guys. as i walked up after my run to say hello to my colleague, travis shouted out in english, “are any of these guys the one you’re in love with?”
i hope to god he had ascertained beforehand that none of them spoke our native language. my life is like a teen book.
