{Thursday, December 5}

it's 12:30 am and i'm sitting here in my reading glasses, my old lady sweater and a bucket hat. it's really normal the way it all came about. i'm working on the last project due for hell week and i was feeling pretty tired, so i decided i need to do something different. first i put on my mary-kate and ashley olsen-style skull cap, courtesy of lin and her adventure in ny. that was fun for a while but i was running around the hall too much giggling and saying things like, "i don't clean up after lost boys," so i had to stop that. but i decided that i was onto something with the thinking cap. but the only other hat i have is a roxy bucket hat. so, here we find ourselves. the sweater and glasses just felt smarter to me, so i added those too.

i think i should go to bed.

did i mention that my formal dress is very, very pretty?

i love being a girl. i could only be happier if the dress had a bustle in it. and a pony.

i am drowning
there is no sign of land
you are coming down with me
hand in unloveable hand

-the mountain goats, "no children"

i feel almost embarrassed to say that i like a band with that name, but what can i say: they are very good. sort of folksy and although the lyrics of this particular song are pretty dark, there's this "whimsical" quality to it (in the words of my most music-savy friend) that makes this song pretty addictive. or maybe it's just the way he says, "i hope you die".

note to jared: you would probably really like this band. they are all dark and poetic like you. i half expect them to sing out, "...and then i'll go drink bleach," or something equally darling and artsy.

...

a carson moment from the sports-savy ben:

"Out of the mouth of Jim Rome, the most respected sports radio personality in the biz...'USC is the second best team in football right now. And Carson Palmer deserves the Heisman. He won't win it, but he should. Carson Palmer is the best player in the NCAA. No one has been better the last couple of months.'"

did i mention that he touched my hand? that he then went on to throw over 400 yards against notre dame, the most one man has ever brutalized the fighting irish? that he was on the front page of sunday's l.a. times? he's unstoppable. i think it's time for a new carson pic.

althought i actually think this image is way cooler:

those are our boys taking down the ridiculously-named nd quarterback, carlyle holiday. no wonder he can't throw a touchdown to save his life - he sounds like a guy who should be wearing sweaters, rowing boats and eating ivy*, not going head-to-head with one of the toughest defenses in the nation.

it's 2am and i'm sitting here in a ball gown. worse yet, the gown doesn't quite fit and so i'm trying to devise some sort of contraption to keep the thing from sliding down. goddamn this mchugh build and our predisposition to delicate ribcages - i can't find a strapless dress that fits to save my life. i spent two hours before last year's formal tacking the dozen straps that crossed the back of that dress. i'm too embarrassed to write about what i've rigged up to make sure this year's dress doesn't slip from my bosom. all this because i refuse to buy a formal dress for a school dance since i'm well past my prom years. it just feels wrong.

after having this dress a test run for several minutes i have decided that it's just not possible to go an entire night without exhaling, and without full lung capacity at all times this dress isn't going to hold up. so we're back to square one - dresslessness - only now the dance is six days away. drama. i'm going to go to bed now before i hyperventilate; i'm already on the verge of passing out from holding my breath so long.
