have noticed that it is very hard for me to describe anything of real significance that happens to me here - things that might be interesting to people who are not in italy, like the fact that i got to tour the vatican gardens (not open to the public) and take a nap in the sistine chapel (well i wasn't supposed to but we had two hours in there, just my classmates and i, on a private tour, and i was just lying on this bench, and anyone who knows me knows that i am a borderline narcoleptic... i feel that it is quite understandable, really.)

instead, i spend my time talking about the most trivial of things. example - the following:

i am almost positive that i saw the three musketeers author alexandre dumas. he was buying foccaccia. i know you are going to say that he is dead. but this guy that i saw not only was his spitting image, but was also wearing a cape, so i feel like the evidence is indisputable.

quote of the day:

my wonderful friend janelle, who sends me the most letters of anyone i know and always tells me what is going on at home and makes me feel extremely loved, also proved to me once again how hysterical she is. (quick note about this girl - janelle hates halloween with a passion i have never known anyone else to feel about a pagan holiday.) anyway, in a letter i received today she told me that some jerk went around our university on valentine's day posting flyers with hearts that said "i hate you - boycott hallmark." understandably, she was perturbed, and as she explained to me:

"i, of all people, know what it's like to hate a holiday, but you don't see me carving swear words into pumpkins."

herrick, i love you.

we've started a new game here: spot the swedes.

my american friends who attend the centro with me and i are in intense competition. each swede has an assigned point value that increases if you spot them outside of the city walls (example: any of the weak swedes spotted inside florence is worth one point; the red-headed king swede spotted in venice is worth an astronomical ten points.)

i am going to dominate this game.

in other news, i had the best weekend yet here because i was in rome. things taken away from this weekend:

1) i need a helipad.*
2) i need my own parrot commune.*

will tell more about how meravigliosa roma is after my english class.

*author's note: items of the pope which i covet.
